Rhinelander, WI — Niina Baum has officially announced her candidacy for Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District, entering a crowded Republican primary with a message aimed at voters who feel increasingly disconnected from political extremes and unrepresented by the current field.
Baum, a lifelong Northwoods resident, is positioning her campaign as a pragmatic, moderate alternative focused on integrity, responsible governance, and solutions shaped by the real needs of the district — not party ideology.
“Too many races today are about proving who’s the loudest or most extreme,” Baum said. “That leaves a lot of people — including traditional Republicans — feeling like they don’t have a real choice. I’m running because I believe representation should be about listening to constituents, understanding their priorities, and doing the job with integrity, even when that means putting personal opinions second.”
Baum says her campaign will focus on economic resilience in rural communities, responsible land use, infrastructure, and ensuring that large-scale developments — including data centers — are subject to stronger transparency, regulation, and local input.
“Rural Wisconsin shouldn’t be treated as an afterthought or a blank check for outside interests,” Baum said. “Communities deserve a seat at the table when decisions affect their land, water, energy systems, and long-term economic health.”
Born and raised on a northern Wisconsin dairy farm, Baum began college early at age 17 in Ashland and earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Northland College. She has spent her career working to strengthen rural communities through nonprofit economic and workforce development, higher education, and entrepreneurship. Baum holds a master’s degree in Information and Communication Technologies from UW–Stout, serves on the Rhinelander Rotary Club Board, and was appointed to her township’s planning commission to help guide local land-use decisions.
She is also a co-founder of Northwoods Young Professionals, an organization focused on retaining and attracting young talent to the region, and regularly volunteers her time organizing events that bring economic activity to rural communities.
Outside of her professional work, Baum has represented Team USA as a competitive dog musher, earning silver and bronze medals at World Championship competitions — an experience she says reflects her belief in discipline, accountability, and showing up prepared.
“Whether it’s been in classrooms, boardrooms, town halls, or race trails, I’ve always believed leadership means doing the work,” Baum said. “I’m running for Congress because rural Wisconsin deserves representation shaped by lived experience, not political ambition.”
Baum emphasized that her campaign will prioritize listening sessions, community meetings, and direct engagement with constituents across the district in the months ahead.
“This campaign isn’t about telling people what they should think,” she said. “It’s about hearing what people are dealing with, understanding where policy can actually help, and building a platform that reflects the district — not just one person’s ideology.”
